AGM presentations

    22 Apr 2022

At the recent AGM we had the pleasure of presenting three trophies – two of them new this year.

The first the Robert Warden Memorial trophy is awarded annually to the owner of the mare that receives the highest marks over the last grading season. In 2021 this was the four-year-old mare Woodclose Anisa who achieved the mark of 9.42.

Bred by her owner Sue Benson, Anisa is by the thoroughbred Andes out of Woodclose Rhianna. As a foal she was Champion Hunter Foal and Reserve Supreme In-Hand Hunter at the Great Yorkshire Show. Her dam Woodclose Rhianna scored 9.71 when she was graded in 2017 and had the second highest mark that year. In turn her dam, Woodclose Silver Storm was the highest graded mare in 2012. So from three generations two mares have won the Robert Warden Trophy and the third was placed second. Congratulations to Sue Benson who received the tophy from outgoing Chairman Jack Cochrane.

The second presentation was the inaugural presentation of the SHB(GB) Breeders Cup. This is an award that recognises the achievements of our breeders and is awarded to a breeder that the Society considers has made a significant contribution to British Breeding. We were delighted to present this first award to Pennie Wallace whose successful breeding programme under the Pencos prefix, has also promoted and supported SHB(GB).

Twenty eight horses with the Pencos prefix are registered with SHB(GB) and 12 with British Eventing. Of those registered with BE, 10 are by SHB(GB) graded stallions and the other two are by Pennie’s homebred stallion who is by an SHB(GB) graded stallion.

At the end of 2021 SHB(GB) was fifth in the WBFSH rankings for stud books in eventing. Pennie bred two of the horses that contributed to this ranking; Pencos Crown Jewel (Jumbo-Rock King) who ridden by Ros Canter has amassed 608 BE points and in September 2021 was 4th in the 5* at Bicton, the other horse Lordships Graffalo (Grafenstolz-Rock King) was bred while Pennie was a senior lecturer and stud manager at Writtle University College and is out of her mare Cornish Queen (Rock King-Ben Faerie, originally bred by Bridget Parker). He is entered for next month’s Badminton horse trials. Congratulations to Pennie.

In 2021 SHB(GB) introduced foal grading. Nick & Amanda Gauntlett generously donated a trophy to be awarded to the breeder of the highest marked foal, in memory of their SHB(GB) graded talented young stallion Party Trick that tragically died at the end of last year.

Breeder and owner Ian Darcy is the first recipient of the Party Trick Legacy glass bowl for Westerdale St George who gained full marks at his grading. He is by Up with the Lark out of Westerdale Queen of Hearts by Chase the Ace XX. Congratulations to Ian.
